Thought I chim in since this hit locally now compared to the bigger story of the NFL team. I see a lot of people mostly Caucasian and others upset calling it stupid to change any teams named Redskins to another name. And what they probaby dont realize saying this, is just a programmed response on a psycological level of a word they grew up with as a non racial word to describe a team. And I understand this and believe those who call their teams Redskins are not doing so in a racist manner. I even read protest saying whats next Redskins potatoes change also. My answer to that would be no because if a school wanted to use that logic it would change the mascot image to a potato instead of the Image of a Native American usually a Chief image. The bottom line is the term Redskins originated as a derogatory term to describe the Native American in our past and is still used in our culture today as a derogatory term to describe Native American in anytown USA. I heard hit myself so its a fact Whats happening is time is catching up and correcting terms used as normality today but still a derogatory term for the Native American cultures. And please dont say this was a long time ago. My father who is 85 this year is living history of one that term was used on in his life along with many others still living today. As a Native American myself the use of Redskins for school teams doesnt offend me because I know those who root for those teams are not thinking derogatory when they say it. But also understand the need to correct a term that is offensive to this day for the Native American culture thats still in use to describe them. The term Redskin is a word used like these words to show scale of words origin. Beaner Chink Coon Cracker Wetback
