Thought I would share a little show-and-tell, though depressing, - TopicsExpress

Thought I would share a little show-and-tell, though depressing, from my recent trip with Kenny Hinkle, who filmed and documented some seagrass problems in my favorite fishing grounds in the IRL. One pic is of one of the numerous floating mats of the lyngbya algae (a blue-green Cyanobacteria, some of which can temporarily monopolize aquatic ecosystems when they form dense floating mats in the water). Most concerning to me is that all of these black floating blobs, and there were literally thousands of them along the west shore in 2 to 4 feet north of the Powerplant, were in mats of otherwise healthy looking manatee grass mats. Way too much floating good grass in my opinion. Have to wonder why it came up by the roots as it did. The water was extremely murky where these mats were most common. Totally turbid for hundreds of yards. Away from the mats, the water cleared a bit. Not surprisingly, I found no fishing action in this water, though some baitfish were there. But no birds at all. The red color in the water in my cooler is obviously what the reddish drift algae (which blankets wide swaths of manatee grass on the east side of the IRL) has secreted overnight in the cooler. Comments anyone? Would like to hear from anglers who fish that area, particularly recently.
