Thought Id shake everybody up a bit and post something from the, A little different, department. This was a very spontaneous reaction to a series of photos I shot in Yellowstone National Park last summer. Ive always loved this view from Artists Point, looking away from the famous Lower Falls. I started the piece as usual with a series of tonal Terry Ludwig Pastels in the red-violet range. A lot of that layer shows on the left edge of the painting in the canyon wall. The dominant color of the weathered volcanic rocks in the canyon is yellow or gold ochre but lots of rusty tones and things that veer into greenish umbers enliven the near-ground. Loving atmospheric effects as I do, this view down-canyon offers lots of distance to explore the color changes from one bend in the canyon to the next. Losing the yellows on one turn and then the reds leaving only blue. I tried to recreate the exuberance I felt on location in this piece, somewhat deviant from my usual staid palette.
