Thought Id share with everyone a lesson Ive learnt over a series of events. Some of you may know that Ive dedicated a couple of months this year in a pro-bono way to assist a non-profit organisation during my spare time whilst recuperating from surgery. In July this year, I was given the task as the liaison officer of an Olympic and world sports champion who is from the Ukraine. She was the special guest of honour for an international competition plus a workshop of which she conducted. The unexpected thing that happened in July was the MH17 tragedy which happened on the same day she was to board her airplane to Malaysia. As the Ukrainian airport froze all flights to the world, it was inevitable that we had to cancel some of the workshop days and many of participants who came all the way from around the region and world were super disappointed in the cancellation. We couldnt do much with the situation in hand as it was so sudden and unexpected. Am thankful that with modern technology we were able to communicate with the guest of honour and we managed to get an alternative re-route of flights for her. She touched down Malaysia about 2 nights later of which some disappointed participants who have paid earlier for the workshop were refunded and have left. We did our best then but everyone understood it was beyond our control. Similarly, earlier this year, just right before Chinese New Year in January, I collapsed in pain while walking around a mall. Was basically doing my last minute Chinese New Year shopping for my 3 girls. My husband drove me to the hospital and wheeled me into the emergency room and after some tests plus x-rays, etc, I had to be admitted for an emergency surgery coz an internal organ was nearly failing on me. It was the cause of all the back pains I had over 2 years of groaning bout it. Also, to be told that it wasnt a onetime surgery but another 2 rounds stretched into 3 months, which shocked us. My husband had to cancel and refund those who ordered macarons from me, as it was certainly not possible for me to bake long hours crouching/bending my back coz it was painful. Weve also notified everyone via a Facebook status message and privately to the small handful of people who were affected then. As much as Id love to not disappoint people, my health and family is more important than anything else in this world. Nobody would ever know when such a predicament can happen. Again ... similar to the unexpected last minute cancellation & refund case of the world champion, it is not within our control. Im sharing this with everyone because I realise that not everyone can emphatise with the situation. On a good note, in 2013 and this year, Crumbs has donated more than RM5,000 worth of macarons and vitamins to non-profit organisations. And guess what? To reward you for reading such a lengthy story, do share a story about “Empathy” OR “A reply to my story” by commenting below and stand a chance to get a “Macaron Flash Drive” delivered to your doorstep (oh yes, its open “worldwide” and do take a peek at the pix of the Macaron Flash drive in the first comment below). If you’re local and live in an area my delivery service is able to reach you, I’ll throw-in a box of 12pcs designer character macarons of your choice together with the macaron flash drive. Am looking out for 5 best stories by the 30th of September 2014 12noon GMT+8. To good health everyone!!
