Thought and Poem – November 29, 2014 After a full summer and fall season, and being outside almost every day, I am going to have to prepared myself for what lies ahead for me during the cold winter months…which is not much! Being over 40….ahem…50…okay, okay 60 years of age, I find that being outside during the winter months would not be a good thing. One fall from slipping on the ice will put me out of commission for a very long time. I would not like this and thinking about the possibilities of this happening really scares me. Hitting my wrist on the edge of my desk gave me a sprained forearm this past week and I would hate to think about what a fall to the ground would do to my aging body. The idea of having to be in the house most of the winter doesn’t set well with me either. I like to stay active and involved in my yard. Knowing that I will not have much to do other than sit in a rocking chair by an open window and look out to view the happenings outside in the neighborhood, really can be depressing. I know I will not be able to escape these moments when I will feel trapped in my home, so I need to prepare in my mind what I will do on the days that I am not feeling so rah, rah, rah. I am making my list of things I will do that can lift my spirits and that will warm my heart when my moods tend to be low and cool. Of course writing will be on top of my list. Adding to this will be cooking come mouthwatering stews or soups or baking some tomato bread (tomatoes in the freezer from my summer garden) or some cookies. There is something about making these foods that make us feel good. The house will smell good, and if I share any of what I make…than other people will feel good too! I am always looking for ways to boost my spirits and those of my family, friends and neighbors. I don’t always succeed in the boosting of the spirits of other people around me, but I feel good knowing that I do try my best. What about you? Do you have your list of things you will do to keep yourself occupied during the long, cold and snowy days this winter and at the same time added to this list things you can do to cheer others around you? Share your thoughts with us…Jeanne Claire Probst In a Rut? Sometimes we find ourselves in a rut and we roll in the mud it creates, We tend to settle in the grooves and lose sight of a way to escape. I am not going to sugar coat this, but life can get tough, For those who deny this, they best beware, when reality hits them…well…facing life can be rough. It doesn’t make a difference who you are, or what kind of life you have lived, When you find yourself void of joy, it helps to reach out to others and give. No matter how small or how large a role you play today, It is the positive steps you take to help yourself, that will lift you out of the muddy waters and rinse the “dirty” blues away. This is how I am feeling today, I just happened to wake up this way, Didn’t do anything yet, so I can’t blame the mood on something I have done, But this is not a good way to begin the new day that has just begun. So I take out the water hose and turn the refreshing waters on, And I am going to rinse away the “muddy mood” I don’t need, and it shouldn’t take long. Then I am going to take a look around me to see what I can do That will help change the mood of the day for me and for someone else who is feeling blue. I find that when I am feeling low, And I just don’t have the gas to go, I need to fill-er-up with something that will lift my spirits And I find helping others gets me closer to having a better day than if I had not tried to find a way to change it.
