Thought everyone might be interested in why young people should not even consider law school. Average student loan debt: $160-180K. Most graduates cant find jobs in the legal world, and for those, average starting salaries $35K. Not worth it. Georgianna Parisi The title of the entry is: Courthouse custodians make more money than new prosecutors in this state You can see the comment at the following URL: abajournal/news/article/courthouse_custodians_make_more_money_than_new_prosecutors_in_this_state/ Really the issue here is not that at least they have jobs or at least the custodians are being paid a living wage. This issue is that these young lawyers more than likely are saddled with insurmountable student debt in the tens or hundreds of thousands and to be paid a measely $37K/year is such a slap in the face. That is not a living wage. When you have hundreds of thousands of dollars in student debt, anything less than six figures is basically a poverty wage. Moreover, on a $37K/year salary you would never get a $200K mortgage, yet that is what many new attorneys are dealing with...a mortgage on a house you cant foreclose on or return to the bank. In public interest, you make just enough to pay your bills and eat top ramen and have no life. Regardless of Loan Forgiveness programs, which take 10 years to complete, most of us will never be out from under our student debt...EVER. Most of us will never be able to afford children, buy a home or even afford all the stupid memberships this profession seems to require of us. This is a damn shame and MA should be ashamed of itself for not paying its public service attorneys a living wage based on reality.
