Thought for the Day A wife of good character brings honor to her husband, while an ungodly woman brings him trouble. Because a man and woman become one in marriage, an ungodly woman undermines a mans well-being in the way a bone disease would undermine his health. The expression, rottenness in his bones simply means that he suffers with a lot of pain. The creation account reveals that God made Adam from the dust of the ground.16 He later put him in a deep sleep and removed a rib, from which He made Eve. Adam recognized Eve as being literally bone of his bones and flesh of his flesh. Scripture uses the phrase one flesh for the first time to express the union of man and woman in marriage in Genesis 2:23-24: And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. Paul also uses the phrase one flesh in Ephesians 5:28-31 in speaking of a man and woman joined together in marriage: So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church: for we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. If one partner acts dishonorably, it brings shame to both. If honor comes to one, both receive honor. If one suffers in illness, both suffer: one physically, one emotionally. Christian marriages should reflect Gods love; the husband should lay down his life for his wife as Jesus laid down His life for the Church. The wife should honor her husband as the Church honors and respects Christ as her Head. The woman is the glory of the man (1 Corinthians 11:7); she reflects her husbands qualities. When she is loved and cared for by her husband, it shows in her life. Husbands or wives who say negative things about their mates hurt themselves, for they attack their own flesh. Many marriages have an unstable foundation because the couple selfishly looks for what their mate can give them, rather than for ways to give to their mate. Those who treat their partners as their personal servants or attempt to control and dominate them, disobey the command to love ones spouse. Spouses should build each other up by honoring and preferring each other. Those who sow selflessness, respect, and thoughtfulness in their marriages will reap blessings. There is no lack of love in a marriage in which the individuals serve each other.
