Thought for the Day: “Hey man! You wanna buy a Rolex? Just $20.” “Sure, at that price I will take all you got!” Of course, you cannot buy a Rolex for $20 and certainly, you will not buy one on the street unless it is hot. We all know that. Nobody wants to be taken in by something fake. Each football season, fans are warned about buying fake tickets and are told what to look for to make sure the tickets are genuine. We have a yellow pen at work that we draw a line over a $100 to make sure that it is real. But, sometimes we get taken in by fakes. And, at other times, we are fakes ourselves. We try to figure out what will be appealing to someone and then we try to act out the part. We pose to be a Rolex when we are only a plain, old Timex. People would much rather have a genuine Timex than a fake Rolex. At least you know that what you have is for real. As Christians, it is important that we be real. Being real is a trait of honesty. Sure, being real exposes us for who we are…warts and all. Yet, doesn’t God know our warts already. The people around us would rather see us with our problems, defects and warts than to sense that we are fake but just don’t know what we are hiding. It is especially insulting for us to walk around acting as if we are holier-than-thou when we and everyone knows that we are sinners with problems just like everybody else. Jesus cautioned against such folks who made fake appearances for the sake of self-aggrandizement. He said that they will have greater condemnation than the folks who are just folks and are honest about themselves. So, let’s be honest. Let’s be real!
