Thought for the Day: Most manifestations of evil that we see are subtle; but, that is not always the case. Evil, the evil one and his emissaries lurk about even where there is good and at times, the Church and the Christian must come in direct contact. Such a confrontation is not to be sought; for, our Lord told us to pray, “Deliver us from evil.” Evil in that famous prayer actually can and probably should be translated evil one, meaning not only the principle of evil but the one from whom all evil emanates. One may be reading ask, “What on earth is he talking about? Evil one in our present, enlightened and scientific age?” Exactly! One look around us and we see the working of the evil one. The observation of violence, people in bondage to a variety of things and the breakdown of basic values of love, kindness and righteous deeds in our families and society show that there is something at work here. Such evil surrounding us everywhere that we look cannot be just an evil principle. There must be a master designer of evil behind the scenes manipulating all many of devices in an all out war against good. “What does this have to do with me?” you ask. That is a very similar question posed by a man possessed by such emissaries of the evil one when he shouted at Jesus, “What have you to do with me? The answer is, “Everything!” Our Lord cast the demons out of the man and released him from his bondage. Certainly, we do not need to blame the devil for all our problems and sins. Our own fallen nature provides much fodder for our rebellious souls; but, neither do we need to dismiss the workings of the evil one because we believe that we are too sophisticated to believe in the devil. What does this have to do with me? Everything! For He (Jesus) breaks the power of canceled sin and sets the prisoner free. His blood can make the foulest clean. His blood availed for me!
