Thought for the day No. 244 God’s Justice “Hear this word you cows of Bashan, who are on the mountains of Samaria, who oppresses the poor, who crush the needy, who say to your husbands, ‘bring wine let us drink!’. Amos 4:1 The prophet Amos is not one to mince words. He compares the leading ladies of Samaria to the plump and healthy cows produced in Bashan. These ladies safeguarded their own needs and were predators preying on the poor and vulnerable, and they even encouraged their husbands to do the same. Their indulgences and rejection of God’s warnings will lead to their demise similar to that of slaughtered cattle. Amos is reminding us that true love is capable of being angry and pointed. Here God’s wrath is an expression of love for other human beings. He will exercise judgment on those who pursue a life of oppression, dominance and rebellion.
