Thought for the day… Stress… Stop and think about the number of stresses that you encounter each day. There are typically three types of stress: - Acute (Short period of time, day-to-day, physical and emotional) - Episodic (When acute stress is encountered more frequently); and - Chronic (long term exposure to stress, unhealthy). Chronic stress has been shown to negatively impact training performance and recovery, and also makes changing body composition much more difficult. Although stress typically contains a negative connotation, however when managed correctly, our daily demands and the physical stress and pressures we encounter can actually lead to joy, excitement and bring happiness to our lives. It is when we fail to manage stress that it can become chronic and thus negatively effect our training and performance. Therefore, to ensure we are making progress in the gym, we must also get a handle on our stress levels and do our best to keep them to a minimum. Data has shown that those who suffer from psychological stress will have slower rates of recovery and must periodise their training to ensure adequate recovery.
