Thought for the day! "Typical students do not suffer from having peers with special needs in the classroom; to the contrary, it provides them unique and meaningful opportunities to develop essential skills. Working with classmates of varying abilities is a challenge to their creativity, problem solving, and communication skills. Sometimes the typical peers can even be mentors, helping to build both their self-esteem and empathy. As teachers we know that we learn best when we teach. Gifted children learn an abundant amount when they are allowed to instruct their less capable peers. Done under the appropriately wise guidance of a teacher, this can be a wonderful opportunity for both children. Finally, when typical kids see the joy and struggles of their friends with special needs, it engenders gratitude, empathy, and love. There is no more meaningful or enriching experience for them than to know they have helped another child who is less fortunate."
