Thought for the night: Potty Training a former preemie. Outside of Jaydens speech delays and general rambunctiousness we are at a point in his life where the obstacles are smaller and far between. That is, except getting him potty trained. Jayden is well past 4 years old and a few previous attempts failed miserably. Perhaps we didnt have the best strategies to begin with, and having to take the lions share of the responsibility as a SAHD, I didnt exactly embrace the amount of work it takes to be successful. To complicate things, its hard to know if youre getting through to your loved one when they are still struggling to find proper forms of communication. But recently the writing has been on the wall that he was ready to make the transition. We are on day 3 and we had significant progress today! The endgame is becoming clearer, and its exciting for us on multiple levels. It hasnt always been perfect, but the progress he has made is tangible. You may be wondering what this has to do with prematurity, and I can think of three lessons we can take from this... - Sometimes its hard to explain to people what your own journey is like. The struggles, why something seemingly small is a huge deal for us, etc. Some people, even those close in our hearts and heads, may not ever really understand what a day in the life is like. - Your child is going to approach, tackle, and overcome obstacles at a pace they are ready for, and every child is different. Like a blog topic we hit on a while back, comparison is the thief of joy. - That being said, sometimes perseverance is a team effort. I knew Jayden was primed for a real effort at being potty trained, but I had to embrace the role needed to help him succeed. Cheerleader, coach, even tough love daddy. Keep in mind your attitude and effort, regardless of the obstacle, can be achieved. (Papa Joel)
