Thought of the day (Monday, July 22nd) Beloved, take a few - TopicsExpress

Thought of the day (Monday, July 22nd) Beloved, take a few minutes right now and imagine you had the opportunity to talk with Jesus Christ for 15 minutes and you could ask Him for absolutely anything, what would you ask for: a new job; more money; a new home or car; His help for you to overcome a particular sin or habit in your life? When the 12 disciples had the opportunity to do just that you might be surprised at what they asked for! In the coming days we’ll look at prayer (talking to God). First, we’ll look at what prayer isn’t and get that out of the way. Let me share four faulty misconceptions about prayer – #1 Some of you treat prayer as a magic wand with the attitude of telling God, “God, I desire it, and my wish is surely your command!” #2 Some treat prayer as a first aid kit – For some of you prayer is an act of desperation, similar to a sign placed with a fire extinguisher, “Use only in case of emergency.” You see prayer as a last resort, when all else has failed – it must, at long last, be time to pray! #3 Some treat prayer as a debate – Some of you have the idea you must somehow convince God to give you something you want, or do something for you. You get busy giving God all the many reasons why He should do this for you or give that to you. #4 Some treat prayer as a religious duty – For many, prayer becomes motivated by guilt, “I know I should pray more,” which means prayer becomes a duty, an obligation, boring - something to be endured rather than enjoyed. It’s my hope that these misconceptions will be demolished and you’ll have a much clearer understanding of what a gift prayer is to us. Blessings!
