Thought this was kind of a disappointment. It turned out to be pretty much exactly what I expected, nothing more, nothing else. So, yes, that was disappointing. Surprisingly, Wingards Youre Next is a far more impressive picture. This draws on the always promising premise of the charismatic stranger in town with a hidden agenda. There is some fun stuff here to be sure but its never strange enough or as wildly unhinged as it needs to be and even moments that work (e.g. the final moment for example) are too pat and self satisfied. Its understatement finally edges too close to the overly familiar, the conventional. Should have probably gone full Araki. Bryan Singers Public Access also couldnt match the brilliance of its set up with a reveal or resolution that deserved it. Maybe its just really hard to pay off on a premise like this. Maybe thats part of the reason why Teorema is the most successful of these kind of films: because the pay off is so inextricably tied to the mystery of the set up; the former is an extension of the latter, not an explanation for it. Still, this is a nice star making turn from Stevens which functions as all purpose audition reel. Maybe *hell* be the next Bond, who knows.
