Thought this was neat...I posted earlier about the Super Typhoon Neoguri hitting Japan, but didnt realize it would help forecast the upcoming weather here in the US. Youve probably heard of the jetstream, which is a fast river of air that circles the globe, high in the atmosphere, that guides storms and allows fair weather systems to build over a particular region. By seeing where the atmosphere steers a Pacific typhoon it tells what the weather will be like 6-10 days later in the US because it tells you what the jetstream will do. The first graphic shows the typhoon near Japan this morning (on the left side) and then the typhoon going east of Japan + being absorbed into the jetstream (on the right). The jetstream is like a huge jump rope in that the highs and lows over the Pacific (right side of 1st graphic) are transferred down the rope into the US. That amplification then moves over to the US next week (2nd graphic) just like movement of a jump rope traveling down the rope. As a result, a huge trough forms over the east allowing cold polar air to dive south + east (and heat rising in the west with the ridge). As seen in the 3rd graphic the temps will fall 10 - 20 degrees below average in the east (from the trough) + 10 - 20 above average in the west (from the ridge). Since its the middle of summer it wont feel cold, but will be cool and less humidity in the east (as seen in the Chicago temps in 4th graphic). The question mark will be how far south will the cooler air get since it will be fighting summer heat. 5th graphic shows a clear line on where the European model thinks it will get right now. Either way im sure you wont hear about it on the news since it goes against global warming.
