Thought to share a tiny excerpt of a rejection letter that I received today. I want to print it out/cut it up/frame it. {it is so unlike the almost curt/terse, and yes, derisory letters I have received here in Ireland (home of poets) } How to reply to you who have been so gracious in sending your work – with such hope and uncertainty, perhaps? How not to offend, to dispirit? How to say thank you, but no, thank you, in some manner approaching …kindness? I don’t know if this is possible, actually. Yet: I am in your debt; I am flattered – yes, most flattered – that you would think enough of ******** to send your work to us, to entrust us with it and believe that we would treat it as the gift (expensive or not, one does not consider such matters when receiving another’s giving) it is, the product of hours of labor, many times, even days, weeks. (I know, believe me!) And to be forced by circumstances to send to you this curt note: for what could not be too brief, too seemingly hasty, in the face of such magnanimity and such toil?
