Thoughtful article about a book by a Japanese young man with autism. He is non-verbal and explains what he is thinking and the reasons for many of his behaviors. Author David Mitchell who has a son with autism offers this..... “The book is very hopeful...The book appears to show – the book does show – that people who are being routinely dismissed as severely autistic, who are unable to communicate, who cannot hold a metaphor in their head, can in fact do these things. They understand not only how they are feeling but how others are feeling about them. They are capable of humour; it is just that they can’t communicate it to the world at large.” Well worth a read.
