Thoughtful, practical, intelligent design by Claudio Pino. -The ball finials on the inside of the ring shank allow it to expand to go over a large knuckle. This is an ancient technique, rarely used today. -The shank being thicker at the top & thin at the bottom give it the tension to return to its original size, like a spring. More comfortable between the fingers, too. -The round shape of the shank reduces metal fatigue which would cause a flat or square shank to break sooner. -The balls provide some counterbalance to the weight of the stone at the top and lessen poking or pinching. -The open shank allows size flexibility over time and is relatively simple to adjust later, if required. -No hinges/moving parts to collect soil, discolor, or break. -No holes or settings on the shank (a HUGE pet peeve) to weaken the structure, collect goo or poke, scratch, wear, discolor or otherwise irritate the wearer. Bravo, Maestro. That is one excellent design!
