Thoughts? The naked mole rat, a notoriously ugly rodent with a famously long lifespan, lives up to 28 years, eight times longer than a normal mouse, according to Smithsonian Magazine. They also dont get cancer, despite this long life. Last year, biologists from the University of Rochester discovered a chemical, HMW-HA, in the naked mole rat that they believe makes the animals cancer-proof. When the researchers removed HMW-HA from the naked mole rats tissue, the cells become susceptible to tumors, whereas with HMW-HA, no evidence of tumors in the animals ever existed. Theoretically, the compound could be injected into human cells to induce an anti-cancer response, lead researcher Andrei Seluanov said in a release. Numerous other scientists are conducting similar work to see if the naked mole rats mysterious anti-cancer abilities could be applied to humans.
