Thoughts, Views and Opinions On This! Jail program blends cats and inmates Posted: Apr 07, 2014 3:12 PM PDT Updated: Apr 07, 2014 3:29 PM PDT By: Nathalie Pozo - All News 106.7 The Gwinnett County jail has adopted a new program that has its inmates purring. A current program connects a dog that would likely be euthanized with a male inmate. Now, cats are being added to the mix: paired with female inmates. Its awesome, it helps the time go by and it relaxes you sometimes to have the cat interaction, something from the outside that you are used to, says inmate Christina Hughes. The women care for the cats, feed them, play with them, train them and get them ready for adoption. Its kind of strange but they want to climb up on the table or we have one that is notorious for climbing in the toilet bowl or yanking down towels so there is some kind of obedience training that goes into it, says inmate Amber Clark. Officials hope the program will teach the women responsibility and give them some unconditional love. It really helps because even if you have a bad day here you can always go in and you have your cat, that loves you no matter what, says Clark. 12 cats have made their way through the jail, and eight have already been adopted The inmates who care for these animals also have the option of adopting the animals after they are released.
