Thoughts for October: Hello! Yesterday I worked my beloved - TopicsExpress

Thoughts for October: Hello! Yesterday I worked my beloved second job as a military officer. The hours are horrendous, sometimes dangerous, sometimes frustrating. But,the relationships and brotherhood and service to others is unmatched. After limited sleep, I drove like a banshee to get back to Dallas to make Gavins early evening basketball game. I made it by five minutes helps to have a fast car!). I love the little blessings God gives us daily. When I got settled, one of my dear friends and dads ( Scott Vaughan) of one of the players told me (I was still in uniform) hey, great job making Gavins game..most dads I know after working all week and weekend would not have made in home in time. I thought it was kinda strange because I cannot think of time when I didnt make it home to a game or family event when I know if I pushed hard, I just might make that game in time... Isnt that what dads and moms do? We work the jobs that pay us the most (usually) so we can provide the most (or what is needed ) for our children and future life plans. Its not just about the money (although I have not met anyone who has turned down increased salary in their current job because they thought they were paid too much). God has blessed me with the ability to provide and I hopefully have not squandered or taken for granted those gifts. I still work both my jobs (three if you count my freelance pro bono legal work for troops) with all the passion, power, and pride I can muster. Kristin even more so in my opinion. You all know I married a superwife and mom. She never ever stops. When she is home, she is doing the majority of the housework and cooking and cleaning (I know we all need to help more). She never complains and literally falls asleep within seconds of her head hitting the pillow. Scott is the same way. He always attends his sons games and events when he can. Thats what moms and dads do that I roll with ( Michael and Kristen Carver for instance). I thanked Scott of course but I didnt really think about it until another event this week crossed my mind and I thought, I should write about my all in philosophy about life, work, relationships, hobbies, fatherhood, friendship, fitness, etc.. So of course I will first tie in a country song! (ok country rap but same same ! Its called Workin by Big Smo. The songs premise is easy. Wake up each day and be productive. Work harder than everyone in everything that is important to you. This song aint for you if you asleep at 7:30...thirty below to one hundred degrees....Im the first to clock in the last to leave...I aint ever had a problem rolling up my sleeves....spend more time on the clock than I do with my life...thats the only way to make a honestys day pay. It really is a great song. Be all in in everything you. It will pay dividends, I promise. Earlier this week I was mentoring a young MBA student who I have interning for one of my managers this fall. During the session, he mentioned, hello Sir, do you think you could recommend to my boss to have me do other projects at work that are more MBA worthy then just processing purchase orders for Verizon? I about fell out of my chair. It wasnt as arrogant as it sounds, it is just standard for this generation. Everything has been given to these kids by their parents and they truly do not know what true hard work is and how fortunate they are. I looked at him rather sternly and said (name withheld), hey bud, lets talk about what you are asking me for a second. The 20 people on your team have over twenty years of professional experience, all degreed individuals, with most of them holding graduate degrees. All day long 95% of them work the system, the process, the phones, the communication between stakeholders to make sure the purchase orders that are processed (over $10B in value and 1M in transactions) each year to perfection. Many of them are so good at their job the internal clients rave about the value they provide to the company. They have also endured decades of downsizing, family stress, and new directors (I am now the longest serving director they have ever had). So are you telling me what they do everyday is not worthwhile work of a 22 year old, first year MBA student? Really? Are you the best at the three systems we use? Do people come to you with questions on how to do the job better or what other things are needed to close a difficult order? Have you in the thirty days you have worked for me become the best of the best? Also, did you know after my graduate degree from Duke University I accepted a job at Nortel Networks as a contract buyer? Did you know what I did? I placed purchase orders everyday. At first I was horrible and slow but I worked straight through lunch everyday. I was the first one in the office and the last one to leave. Did you know after six months I was soon one of the best in system knowledge and I was the fastest to process spot buy (urgent needed, low dollar, high transactional) orders? Guess what? I never asked them for more work worthy of a Michigan State and Duke grad. Guess what? The offered me a full time soon thereafter. Once there, I worked extra harder and was a manager within a year. That job prepared me for my first strategic sourcing manager job (which ultimately changed my life and prepared me for higher and higher jobs across the country the next ten years). So, I know you didnt mean it the way it came across but my suggestion to you is to be the best buyer in my organization. His response: Yes Sir. [Big Smo] Thirty below to a hundred degrees You aint pushin hard enough if your hands dont bleed Im the first to clock in and the last to leave I aint never had a problem rollin up my sleeves [Big Smo & Alexander King] I woke up this mornin, tied my boots up Cause I knew its goin to be a long day Fired my truck up, grabbed my coffee Kissed my baby, got on my way Cause Im workin til its hurtin Thats the only way to make an honest days pay So Im workin even when its hurtin Thats the only way to make an honest days wage [Big Smo & Alexander King] Workin, workin --- Read more at lyrics/workin-lyrics-big-smo.html#ex2HyMWocxfoQ6vK.99
