Thoughts for Today- Exodus 20:18-21 18 Now all the people witnessed the thunderings, the lightning flashes, the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they trembled and stood afar off. 19 Then they said to Moses, “You speak with us, and we will hear; but let not God speak with us, lest we die.” 20 And Moses said to the people, “Do not fear; for God has come to test you, and that His fear may be before you, so that you may not sin.” 21 So the people stood afar off, but Moses drew near the thick darkness where God was. Sometimes we don’t want to see who God really is. Here, the people of Israel shrink back in fear when confronted with the true presence of God, and they decide they’d rather just deal with Moses. It’s an understandable request, but it’s hardly a wise one. In Proverbs 1:7, we learn that “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” An accurate picture of God, His holiness, power, and love is critical to a life of good choices. Seeing God’s greatness surely underscores how important righteous choices are, doesn’t it? Sadly, many believers try to re-create God in their image. They decide that He’s more on their scale—without the weaknesses. When God is little more than a stronger version of me, I don’t feel the need to take my sin seriously. I can go about my day living as though I’m the center of my world. But when I see Him as He truly is, I have no choice but to reorder my life. He must be the center, His purpose must be my reason-for-being, and His commands must form the pattern for my life. To truly see Him, is to fear Him, and to be forever amazed by His love toward us. – Dr. Mike Clarensau
