Thoughts from Chief Sjolander... Come young grasshopper...I have many lessons to teach you... Some of you might be too young to remember the TV show Kung Fu, but in that show, a wise old man taught a young student (Grasshopper) many lessons about life. This is what we try to do when we hire new staff and we start our field training program... We teach them how to write reports, where all the stuff in the squad goes, geography, how to be proficient with a firearm, taser, mace, the list goes on and on... The older I get, the more Im interested in teaching new officers how to treat others and how to handle the bad stuff that we see in our lives. This is where you all come in... Ive gotten some great advice and insight from you, our Facebook friends. That being said, I thought today we could take some time and Im interested in what you would give a new officer for advice. So here we go...youre the FTO (field training officer) sitting shotgun in a squad. A brand new rookie is sitting in the drivers seat and you are spending the day together. They are looking to you for words of wisdom, life lessons, and how to turn the light bar on... Ive learned a lot about this profession from people who have never sat in a squad...
