Thoughts from Chief Sjolander... Lumps, bumps, and scars... Ok, today we get a little personal. Lets talk about our bodies and what we see when we look at ourselves, or others. What do you see when you look in the mirror. If youre like most of us, you see a number of things that you dont like and wish you could change and hopefully some things you like. When I look at myself, I see a roadmap of a life well lived. I see some scars, wrinkles, tattoos, hair that is graying, and Im ok with that. This is my body and its meant to be used. Im not saying I dont take care of it, Im saying its not perfect, nor am I. I could lose some weight, but my shape is from eating good meals with family, friends, and some strangers Ive met along the way. A lot of my wrinkles are from laughing and if you ask me, those are the best ones to have. My eyes are still bright because I try to see the good in people. My hands are weathered, but theyve been through a lot. My hands have helped some, hurt some, comforted some, and have made music. Ive held newborns, and some taking their last breaths with these hands. These hands are the same ones that type here everyday trying to put what I see and feel into words. My shoulders are broad from carrying my kids, other kids, and somedays, what feels like the weight of the world. The next time you look at a person, try to see the path theyve taken by looking at their bodies. Stretch marks could mean theyve brought another life into this world, thats amazing to me. Scars can be from poor choices, from looking illness or death in the eye, and living to tell about it. I guess what Im saying is stop being so hard on yourself and others. Each of us has a story and if we are lucky enough to be here, lets stop judging and start sharing these stories with those wise enough to listen. Stay safe, Lee
