Thoughts from Day #38: After 38 days in Colombia, we finally - TopicsExpress

Thoughts from Day #38: After 38 days in Colombia, we finally got out and did some sightseeing! Yesterday morning we hired a driver to take us to visit one of the most famous mountain peaks in Bogota, Mount Monserrate. It is about a 30 minute drive from our neighborhood. You can buy tickets at the base of the mountain and ride a cable car all the way up to the top. It overlooks all of Bogota and the view is supposed to be incredible. I say supposed to be because we never quite made it. As we drove past the line to buy cable car tickets to the top, I am pretty sure I audibly gasped in horror. The line resembled Disney Worlds Space Mountain on a holiday weekend. It was insanity. I knew the kids would never make it. To be completely honest, I dont think I could have made it. Our driver Rene told us he could take us to see parts of historic Bogota, so we decided to forego the crazy line and continue on. Im not one to typically jump up and down for historical tours, but I would have done just about anything to escape that line. I still shudder thinking about it. We had a really nice morning. We walked around some beautiful plazas and saw some amazing cathedrals. We tried some fresh sugar cane juice and some tropical fruits. We were warned that the fruits are supposed to be eaten in moderation (unless you want to spend the day sitting on the toilet). Im not so sure the kids were impressed with our tour, but graham crackers and squeezie packets were present, so they were happy enough. This was Luis first big outing. Our family was desperate to get out and do something besides just walking to the park or grocery store, so Im really glad we tried a new adventure. Unfortunately, I think it was probably too much for Luis. He had a major melt down on the way home and was pretty aggressive for the rest of the day. He woke up this morning at about 3 am, inconsolable. He seemed so scared and clingy. I pulled him into bed with me and he laid awake for the next hour and a half whimpering and sucking his thumb. Luis is making great strides in bonding with us, so sometimes its easy to forget where hes coming from and what we are up against. Being he has lived his entire life in an orphanage, he hasnt been out much. He isnt used to car rides or being in a crowd. Before us, he had never eaten in a restaurant or gone into a grocery store. Luis is just now beginning to establish a base sense of security with us. He is getting more comfortable with our routines and schedule at home. So when we took him out of his new, safe environment, his security probably felt threatened. Everyday we continue to try and figure out Luis. We watch his signals to let us know whether or not he is feeling safe or anxious. Everyday is a new opportunity for us to show him he is secure. Thank you for the continued prayers of bonding for our family. We are forever grateful for the way you all are investing in us. Words cannot express our gratitude. Have a happy Monday!!
