Thoughts from last night: Brians voice sounded fantastic. If hes laying off the smoking, it shows. It had more consistent power throughout the entire set, even if it felt like he might be holding back a little. Theyre super-rehearsed, the one glitch was an equipment problem and not a someone is lazy problem. All the new songs are eminently performable and theyve worked out how to do it so if things drop out its not because they cant figure out how to manifest it live. My only complaint is that it definitely felt like a showcase -- it was really missing the cohesion and energy of an actual concert, which isnt really their fault, because it was -- until the barrier broke during 59 Sound and then there was more energy in the room. I also want to note that the SOUND was good, even down front, even if it was loud as heck. Given that this was not supposed to be a fan event I am super appreciative that they offered this to the fan club in the end, especially since I cant make any of the September shows and am off seeing the Replacements the weekend of the GSAC show.
