Thoughts on Proverbs 9: Ever wonder how wise you are? This proverb contains a test for us to see if we are wise at all. Proverbs 9:7-9 – He who corrects a scoffer gets shame for himself, and he who rebukes a wicked man only harms himself. Do not correct a scoffer; lest he hate you; rebuke a wise man, and he will love you. Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; teach a just man, and he will increase in learning. How is that for an arrow to the heart of the matter? How do you respond when you are rebuked by a wise person? How do you respond to instruction or correction? Do you love the one who rebukes you and appreciate the one who gives you the instruction you need, or do you get offended? When you read the Bible, you will find rebuke and correction for your life. God sends folks into your life to help you and often it comes in the form of rebuking or instructing. On the other side of the coin – do you keep from rebuking someone so they will love you more? It takes a person who cares to rebuke someone they love. They take a chance of being hated. Considering this I know that I have enabled many because I was too concerned about what their response would be to correction. It is easier to just let it go. It takes work to rebuke or instruct someone to help them. It is always a risk. Lord I am so broken that I have enabled when I should have spoken truth and I have been offended when I was given correction. Forgive my brokenness and show me how to not only speak the truth in love but show me how to receive the correction I need for my blind spots.
