Thoughts on the Killing of Michael Brown 1. The case, like all - TopicsExpress

Thoughts on the Killing of Michael Brown 1. The case, like all criminal cases, should be adjudicated in accordance with the evidence. That means no free pass for any police behavior, but also none for that of Brown and his companion. Political pressure from either side must not be allowed to contaminate the case. 2. Eyewitness testimony is useful, and more of it should be obtained, not suppressed. Physical evidence is even better. If it shows the policeman who did the shooting sustained injuries caused by Brown, he still executed an unarmed man, probably necessitating charges of at least manslaughter. 3. If no police injuries were caused by the victim and his friend, the charge should be second degree murder. 4. Police refusal to name the officer involved is inappropriate. It may be concealing evidence, or allowing the fabrication of evidence during the information blackout. If the mans life is in danger, he should be given proper protection until he is either cleared or convicted, and possibly thereafter. 5. Angry protests are understandable, considering the very large number of police brutality cases around the country just about every day. A revolt may even have become necessary to stop frequent police assaults and murder of citizens. 6. Rioters who loot and destroy private businesses are serving no political cause; they are merely criminals exploiting a temporary breakdown in law and order.
