Thoughts on the new Pink Floyd album... Its all pretty pointless - TopicsExpress

Thoughts on the new Pink Floyd album... Its all pretty pointless to comment on the album and the release but since I asked for your opinion, heres mine. Although most comments that Ive seen are positive there are many fans who question the decision to release a new album and the fact that Roger isnt involved. To be honest, Im pretty tired of the whole debate. I guess youve seen Mike Portnoys statement as well, saying that the whole thing is disrespectful of Roger and what he created. He even compare Roger and Davids fall out to his feud with Dream Theatre. Now, I dont know the story but what Ive read is that he left the band for personal reasons and was denied a comeback after the band had decided to moved on, with a new drummer. In that sense, the story is somewhat similar, with Roger being certain that Floyd couldnt exist without him. Before I go on I want to stress that I love Roger and I have only the highest respect for his work and legacy. He, together with David, Nick and Rick has created what I think is the greatest sound of all time. That being said, to think that Pink Floyd will be the good old Floyd with him back on board, is foolish. Pink Floyd changed when Syd left and they changed when Roger left. Floyd did also change when Roger was a part of the band and Floyd would have changed again, even if hed stayed on. Its funny that so many fans want to hear something new from the band but at the same time, it needs to be on their terms. We want a reunion but only if its with all original members and only if they make something as good as Dark Side or WYWH. If its not, its disrespectful to their legacy and fans. I know that now everyone thinks that but when statements from guys like Portnoy is all over the music press, it fuels the old and pointless debate. Would Dream Theatre be the same band with him back on drums? Would Kiss, another life-long passion of mine, be the same band with Peter Criss and Ace Frehley back on board? No. Kiss would sound like shit but thats a different story. People seem to forget that even though Momentary and Bell isnt quite Floyd from the heydays in the 70s, Pros and Cons and Radio Kaos was certainly not that either. Would they create magic thats just as good as WYWH if they got back together? Probably not. Its interesting when people use Amused to Death as an example of how Pink Floyd would have sounded with Roger. Its similar to Final Cut, which indeed is a great Floyd album. Well, its a great album, but its not Floyd. They had no say and was paid for the sessions. Amused to Death is a great album but its a solo effort from Roger. The reason why bands wont sound like they used to if they reunite, is that bands change. We change. We, as fans, have a sentimental relationship with art and music and we think that as long as the originals from when we were young got back together, it would be just like before. Why shouldnt it? Its not that easy. David has changed. Roger has changed. Ask Paul McCartney to write a new Penny Lane or Hey Jude. He cant. The reason is - hes not the same person. What would a reunion or collaboration sound like? Both Roger and David has evolved as artists and musicians. They have gone ways where Floyd would never have gone. We would have hated it if they did. After 30 years I would think they had too much integrity as musicians on their own to give that up. Whether or not we like what theyre doing now is kind of beside the point. Should David and Nick put Pink Floyd to rest? Why? They own the name. Roger left. Simple as that. Personally Im very much looking forward to the release. Its exciting that its a new album from Floyd but it doesnt really matter what it says on the cover. Im looking forward to hear what David, Nick and Rick sounded like... one last time.
