Thoughts on whats going on in Ukraine? Right now, it is unclear if the State of Ukraine continues to exist. The regions of Donetsk and Lugansk have declared Peoples Republics independent from the central government in the Ukrainian capital of Kiev. Russian-backed protests continue, with an increasing military nature. Government buildings have been occupied and police and military have switched sides to supporting the protests. The Donetsk region has set a referendum date for May 11th on joining Russia, just like what happened in Crimea. The situation is complicated. The current government in Kiev is the result of a coup detat against an elected, though highly corrupt, government. But it seems the governments military is unwilling to follow their orders to put down the protests in eastern Ukraine through the use of force. The situation is further complicated as the Kiev government also includes several far-right factions and up to a 1/4 of the cabinet seats are held by the neo-fascist Svoboda party. The EU has violated its own rule about stopping the growth of the far-right. Ukraine is stuck in a hard place between two imperialist powers. The US/EU on one hand, and the resurgent Russian empire on the other hand. A proxy war between by the US and Russia seems increasingly likely. Solidarity with the people of Ukraine against both empires.
