Thousands of Rohingya Muslims are fleeing Myanmar as persecution - TopicsExpress

Thousands of Rohingya Muslims are fleeing Myanmar as persecution against the minority group continues in the East Asian country. A leading NGO says at least eight-thousand Muslims have left the northern Rakhine state on cargo ships for Thailand and Malaysia in less than two weeks. The mass exodus follows a campaign of arrest by the government in the region. Reports say local authorities have rounded up a number of community and religious leaders and tortured some of them to death. The crackdown has caused panic among Rohingyas. Myanmar’s one-point-three million Muslims are said to be one of the world’s most persecuted communities who are denied citizenship. Hundreds of Rohingyas have been killed and over 140-thousand displaced in attacks by extremist Buddhists since 2012.
