Thousands of people celebrated the reopening of Wandle Park following a multi-million pound revamp, with a day of fun-filled activities on Saturday 6 July. The official launch, organised by Croydon Council and the local community, follows a £3.5m transformation of the 123-year-old park that has returned the River Wandle to the surface and brought about a host of new and improved facilities. The free event celebrated the many generations of people who have have enjoyed the park, and those who will continue to do so in the future. Among the attractions at Saturday’s event was a live community stage with a line-up of local acts including Hipsinc belly dancing and Croydon Music Service’s very own Rockshop. Councillor Phil Thomas, cabinet member for highways and environmental services, said: “Wandle Park has been transformed into a fantastic green space. The work that’s taken place has rejuvenated the entire area, making the park greener with some brilliant new facilities for families to enjoy. Croydon has some fantastic parks; they’re vital in enhancing our quality of life and are places for people of all ages to go to relax, to keep healthy and to enjoy. Wandle Park is a huge asset to Croydon, especially as it is only a stone’s throw from the town centre and easily reached by tram, bike or on foot.” The Wandle Park revival was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Mayor of London, Croydon Council and the Environment Agency. bit.ly/13zWGOq
