Three Examples of Really Cool Stuff: 2014.11.13 1) I probably had the best day Ive had thus far on the floor at work. For one thing, I was moved, at my request, to a different seat. Having less noise and distractions around me did a lot of good. For another, I had some really nice calls. My favorite call was from a Middle Eastern fellow who needed help setting up his internet at his new address. The call was a bit tense until I heard his baby in the background. So, I told him about my nephew-by-choice -- I simply said, nephew -- who was born yesterday, and I told him I have another nephew in Ohio, the child of my stepsister from Jordan and my stepbrother-in-law from Egypt. I told him about how my stepbrother-in-law, Munir, was nicknamed Abu Murad, or Father of Murad, as a child, and so when the baby was born, they named him Murad. All of this, by the way, is true. Anyway, he calmed down considerably, and after everything was set up, he asked, My friend, is there any way I can call a number and talk to you? Youre so much more open-minded than the people I talk to. I regretted I couldnt give him such a number, but we enjoyed the conversation, and at the end, I made sure to tell him, As-salamu alaykum, or Peace be with you in Arabic -- and he naturally responded, Wa alaykumu as-salam, or And also with you. 2) Despite having eaten more than usual this week, I actually lost weight. Im really hoping this keeps up. 3) I received my first full paycheque today, which finally gave me the sense that Im gainfully employed. Of course, I have to catch up on a few purchases. After work, I bought a pair of jeans in my new, smaller size, plus a couple of T-shirts. Also, I got a haircut, and I bought stopwatches for my annual award -- yes, its that time of year again. Of course, I stopped by the supermarket while I was at it. Ill feel strained again after I finish paying bills, but tonight, for the first time in months, I feel solvent.
