Three Examples of Really Cool Stuff: 2014.11.27 1) I was able to spend a good chunk of this day with my Mom. Because Thanksgiving dinner would have been just the two of us, I figured there was no sense in her cooking so much, and so we instead went to breakfast at the 11-Worth Cafe. The bacon and cheese omelette, as usual, was excellent, and the conversation was even better. After Thanksgiving dinner -- see Example Two -- and a nap, I went back to Moms house. Being a Sicilian mother, she naturally had food for me anyway. It turned out she went to a supermarket and bought me a few baked turkey thighs -- three, to be exact. Given that I started eating clean again this evening, the food she gave me probably will keep me fed for the better part of a week. Shoot, I threw some of the food in the freezer, to thaw out in a couple of days. Most importantly, I was able to explain how thankful I am for Moms support and generosity. This year, for instance, she really came through for me while I was looking for a job, and until I received my first couple of paycheques. To the extent that Ive been able to improve and to build a better life, much of it is because of her. 2) I had what Arlo Guthrie would call a Thanksgiving dinner that cant be beat at the house of the Zimmerman family. Andrew and Sarah always have been wonderful cooks, and the meal today was up to their usual standards of excellence. The turkey was tender and juicy, the corn cake -- actually a sort of sweet pudding -- was a new delight for me, and the stuffing was savory. As if that werent enough, Sarahs father brought some homemade pies down from Minnesota, and the apple and rhubarb pies may well be the best I ever have eaten. Fortunately, my stomach has shrunk in the last few months, so I stopped a bit sooner than I might have, otherwise! My favorite part, though, was the company. Andrews sister Melissa and brother-in-law Jonathan came here from Michigan, as did his parents, and Sarahs parents came down from Minnesota -- obviously, little J.W. Zimmerman was a pretty big draw. Jonathan and I talked education and football, and I talked with the parents about nature conservation -- Mr Zimmerman shared a few of my libertarian points of view -- and Mrs Zimmerman talked about how much her other son, Will, still respects and remembers my Mom, his former landlord. Obviously, I was able to hold Jimmy Dubs for a little while, at least until he wanted a second helping of Thanksgiving dinner. This probably was the most content Ive been since my 40th birthday party. I was at Defcon 5, as I put it, pretty much the whole time. The Zimmermans are an amazing family, and I am privileged to have been able to celebrate with them. 3) After dinner, Moms house, and a short nap, I went to Dennys for some quiet reading. Suddenly, I ran into a few familiar faces. A former co-worker of mine, Terri, and her sister Sherri, came in for a break from early Black Friday shopping. We were able to catch up a little -- she moved to Minden, Iowa, about 30 miles east of Omaha, some years ago, and weve talked only on occasion since then -- and I was happy to hear that things were going well for her. Thanks both to Terri, who gave took time away from going over shopping strategy with her sister to talk with me -- its like a football coach taking a break from going over plans before the Super Bowl to make chit-chat -- and to Sherri, who was a good sport about it.
