Three Hamas commanders, two of whom are the highest ranking in southern Gaza, were killed early Thursday in an Israel Air Force strike, one day after the assassination attempt on Mohammed Deif, the military wing chief. Hamas has insisted that the IDF failed in its attempt on Deifs life, but presented no concrete evidence. It is not clear whether or not Deif is deceased. Israels Minister of Defence had declared that the country will continue to hunt senior Hamas operatives wherever they may be found. Prime Minister Netanyahu has declared that none are immune. Rockets and mortar shell fire continued Thursday morning, wounding an Israeli in the Eshkol Regional Council. On Wednesday the UN Security Council deplored the resumption of fighting in the Gaza Strip and called on Israel and the Palestinians to resume negotiations. More than 175 rockets and mortar shells were fired toward Israel on Tuesday and Wednesday. In response, Israel struck some 110 targets in Gaza. Rocket firing and Israeli attacks continue at the present (Thursday, August 21, noon), but the frequency of rockets has decreased, presumably due to the depletion of rockets and launching pads.
