Three Home Runs Not Enough Against Lady Hillcats By Justine Gaskamp Claremore, Okla. — Three Aggies hit home runs this weekend in a three-game series against Heartland opponent Rogers State, as OPSU softball closed out their 2014 season. Laura Trehal, Lilli Ward and Anyssa Barbosa each hit one over the fence for the Aggies but, despite their efforts, the Hillcats took a series sweep winning all three games (7-1, 2-1, 6-4). After being down 4-0 in game one, Trehal drove in the Aggies lone run reaching on a fielders choice in the top of the fourth inning to score Rachel Thompson. The Hillcats went on to score two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to take the 7-1 win. It was Trehal once again who brought in the only run for the Aggies in game two, this time scoring herself on a home run to left field at the top of the seventh. However, the Hillcats owned a 2-1 lead and ended the day marking another notch in their win column. The Aggies found themselves down 5-0 after three innings of play in game three, but senior Lilli Ward turned things around in the fourth with a two-run homer to left-center. Ward and Trehal each scored on the play. RSU brought in one run in the sixth inning going up 6-2 and with one out at the top of the seventh, Anyssa Barbosa drove the Aggies third home run of the series down the left field line for two RBI; Barbosa ad Ashly Duin each crossed home, but the Aggies couldnt pull out the win late in the game and took a 6-4 loss. Aggie pitcher Rachel Thompson got the start in game one and split time with Taylor Richardson; each went three innings. Thompson finished with nine hits, four earned runs throwing one strikeout, while Richardson allowed seven hits and three earned runs. Samantha Arledge pitched 12 full innings for the series, starting both games two and three for the Aggies. Arledge totaled seven strikeouts for the series, giving up six hits and two earned runs in game two and ten hits and five earned runs in game three. Laura Trehal led the team in hitting going 3-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Barbosa and Ward each brought in two RBI for the series as well. Rachel Thompson led in fielding totaling 11 putouts in two games from first base. Trehal put out eight Hillcats from left field and catcher Madison Heathington totaled nine putouts on the series. This series completes the Aggies 2014 season with an overall record of 10-37 and two conference wins. The Aggies will not have the opportunity to compete in post-season but look forward to returning a majority of young players for 2015. OPSU would like to congratulate Aggie seniors Ashly Duin, Kolbi Graves and Lilli Ward on their accomplishments on and off the field, and wish them best of luck in their future endeavors.
