Three Killed in Indiana Supermarket Shooting: Police Reuters (01/16/14) Johnson, Eric M. Indiana State Police say a gunman opened fire inside a Martins Super Market in Elkhart, north of Indianapolis, at around 10 p.m. Wednesday. Two women were killed before the gunman was killed in a shootout with police. Indiana State Police spokesman Trent Smith said that the two dead women are believed to have been a store employee and a female shopper. Authorities do not know what the shooters motive may have been, nor do they know if there was a connection between him and store employees. A semi-automatic handgun and a large knife were found near the suspect following the exchange of gunfire that began when police found the suspect pointing his gun at the head of an individual who is thought to be a supermarket employee. The employee was unharmed. Police are withholding the name of the suspect, who is believed to have lived in the area, until they can notify his family.
