Three cheers to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinels editorial board for publishing this favorable piece about the Safe Water Drinking Act petition to the EPA asking for federal intervention in Kewaunee County. We strongly disagree, however, that the filing of the petition has political overtones, simply because of a pending statewide election. If 30% of tested, private drinking wells were unsafe for human consumption - anywhere - it wouldnt matter who was in state leadership or what the election calendar looked like. Investigation, clean up and reform is needed immediately. Citizens have tried for years to work with the Department of Natural Resources, organize locally, litigate when they had to. Asking for EPA help is just another chapter in a years-long story of this local struggle to protect groundwater.
