Three million residents make up Osaka, Japan’s third largest city and definitely one of its most colorful. Visitors are treated to a bustling landscape of action, bright flashing lights, and surprises around most corners. Famous as an electronics center, Osaka also blends in traditional sites and values, making it one of the country’s more pleasing metropolises to visit. With so much to explore in the city, it’s useful to familiarize yourself before traveling. To get your bearings in the city, ascend the glass-covered escalator to the top of the space-age Umeda Sky Building and take in incredible panoramas of the city below. Perhaps the only view in the city that tops this one can be found at the Kaiyukan Aquarium at Tempozan Harbor Village. The aquariums main tank is one of the largest in the world. Manta rays and whale sharks glide slowly through its waters, hypnotizing gazing onlookers. If you’re feeling a bit hungry after sightseeing, try Osaka’s famous and delicious okonomiyaki. Often called Japanese pizza, the dish is comprised of batter filled with seafood, bonito flakes, and seaweed strips that is prepared on a hot plate and then topped with mayonnaise and dark, sweet sauces.
