Three months to the elections in February, there appears to be a disquiet in the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as several members of the party threaten to shift allegiance. The Party, which appeared to be having the smoothest of rides in the months leading to the general elections after choosing President Goodluck Jonathan as its consensus candidate, may be standing on shaky feet as stakeholders complain of being treated with disregard. Sources within the ruling party indicate that the PDP Ward2Ward Group, one of the grassroots arm of the party have threatened to break away from the umbrella. Indications emerged yesterday that top officials of the party organ are not exactly happy with some of the decisions taken the party. They complain about the shoddy manner in which party officials handle their grievances and alleged sabotage by people perceived to be enemies of Mr. President. Among their many grouses is the manner in which the wife of the Vice President, Namadi Sambo, hijacked an event venue scheduled to host a party conference aimed at sensitizing local government and Ward Exco nationwide on measures to be taken in mobilizing support for Jonathan as the elections draw nearer. According to PDP sources, the program which is scheduled for Thursday, December 4 at International Conference Centre (ICC), Abuja was commandeered by the VP’s wife, Hajiya Amina Namadi Sambo, ostensibly to organize a separate event. Many members of the Ward2Ward Group took offence to her actions threatening to leave the party if things are not done properly. “We deserve to be treated better than this… the Ward2Ward group can boast of getting 4 million votes for Mr. President in 2015 and we wonder why this is happening just months to the election,” said a member of the group who craves anonymity. Another source told YNaija that a letter of complaint has been forwarded to the PDP Chairman, Adamu Mu’azu stating the reasons for their frustration. They also complain that the chairman has neglected them despite all their activities to garner support for President Jonathan in the grassroots. We shall be waiting to see how the cookie crumbles within the largest political party in Africa.
