Three northeast students in Delhi University, one a research scholar and two undergraduate students were allegedly beaten by the locals here in north Delhi on Saturday night. The incident occurred around 7.30pm. According to Gigin, while he and his friend were watching movie in his laptop, the house-caretaker along with 10 men suddenly barged into his room and started thrashing them. Both of them luckily escape from the jaws of death. During the fight, the caretaker secretly reached to Maurice Nagar PS and falsely reported that he was beaten by 2 NE. Even the locals beat the duo outside, near the main road, just few metres away from Maurice Nagar PS. The caretaker (name unknown) and Gigin stay in the same building in Christian Colony, Patel Chest. All the victims belong to Manipur. [Names of the victims were changed to protect their identities] On hearing the fight, Mr Len, a research scholar, came out and saw the arguments between the locals and NE students. When he tried to intervened and make peace both the parties, his head was smashed with baseball bats from behind. He felt unconscious and was brought to Hindu Rao hospital where MLC initiated. Len told iSikkim.Com that he was targeted because of being a Northeast. Gigin said the police came and picked up him including 2 attackers — the caretaker and one of his associates. Most of the local guys involved were not from Patel Chest area, probably hired by the house-caretaker, Gigin said. Gigin added that police has taken the statements of the two locals, but his statement was not made into written. “The police attentively listen to them. The caretaker tries to become as the victim infront of the police”, he said. After Northeast students pursue the case throughout the night, an FIR has been registered in Maurice Nagar Police Station u/s 323 (voluntarily causing hurt)/ 341 (wrongful restraint)/ 34 (common intention) of IPC (1860). Delhi Police’s motto says “Citizens First”, but for the NE folks it’s only “Citizen First, Northeast SECOND!” On hearing the incident Kuki Students’ leaders and Media Incharge of NE Helpline rushed to the spot, visited the victims at the Hindu Rao hospital and police station. They said they spend the whole-night in Patel Chest waiting for a copy of FIR. A good number of NE students in this area said that Maurice Nagar PS is neither responsive nor helpful to the NE folks.
