Three things have happened to me this summer after finally rocking my natural hair: 1. People are shocked about how curly and how soft it is. Its hair. Duh. 2. No one recognizes me anymore - family (!!!!), longtime family friends, some co-workers. Its awkward that people recognize me based on weave - get used to the fro because Im broke. 3. I recognize that Ive been incredibly insecure about looking anything remotely close to African for 26 years (well reality check - Im Ghanaian American) And having a TWA has allowed me to embrace my hair in its natural state, my dark skin, my big nose, my huge lips, my gap toothed smile, my glasses, and I have never felt so free in my life. If being yourself isnt beautiful - I dont know what else is.
