Three weeks ago I had a unique experience. I found myself in the grocery store with my full weight on my right leg reaching for a can on one of the lower shelves with my right hand. As I straightened up I began to smile and Im sure more than one person wondered why a gray haired, stout, older women was just standing there grinning at a can! In that instant I realized I was totally back in my body. After my stroke I did the best I could. Practiced right handed strength building with a little squeezie ball my brother, Eric, gave me and tried to remember to always lead with the left foot. Doesnt sound hard, but for someone who is so decidedly right-handed it was quite a challenge. I felt like my right side didnt belong to me. Like it was, in fact, someone elses body. Or an empty shell.I was not happy about this feeling but I was trying to come to acceptance. Then I reached down and picked up that can.
