Three years after my mom and her husband, Allan Sudholt, bought a tract of two and one-third acres on what used to be part of my grandparents (Sanders) farm near Ilasco, the Hannibal Courier-Post did a nice feature story on Allan. A former World War II Army Captain in Italy, U. of Missouri Extension Agent, and employee of the Foreign Service in Ethiopia and South Korea, Allan turned the rocky hillside soil into a beautiful showcase of hundreds of plants and flowers. Allan died at the age of 85 on this date in 2001, but we still miss his cheerful smile, devotion to horticulture, and love of humanity. After my mom died in 2008, Vikki and I bought the property to keep it in the family. In 2013, we helped our granddaughter and her husband (Shelby and Phillip Foubester) buy the property. Brien Murphy, Courier-Post staff writer, wrote the feature article, and Kim Athon provided these photos for it, March 21, 1992, as Allan was preparing for spring.
