Three years ago my first trainer, Aaron Bartels, spent a whole training session teaching me how to do a Turkish Get Up. At the time I had lost about 30 of the 60lbs that I had lost in 2010. As I watched him demonstrate, I had that dear in the headlight look on my face...I was 48 years old, still overweight and my trainer is going to teach me this move one of his wrestling coaches taught him??? I kept my mouth closed. No matter how hard an exercise or workout is, I never complain...the fact that all three trainers have the faith in me that I could do something that is difficult and challenging to an average person (like me) is what has helped me learn to believe in myself this past three and a half years and has motivated me to challenge myself every single step of my ongoing health and fitness journey. Sooooo, I took a deep breath and smiled and said okay and through a series of stages, Aaron taught me that Turkish get up. Although it took me a few weeks to get that form and technique down, I DID IT and I got good at it! It is actually in the top 10 of my favorite exercises to do! When I saw this video that my FB friend Rich Thaw posted on how NOT to do a turkish get up, I cringed... because I had been taught the correct way to do it, but unfortunately I have witnessed many trainers butcher it in the same way shown in this training video put out by of all companies NIKE!!!! The exercise in this video IS NOT a Turkish Get UP. The turkish get up is an awesome exercise that I highly recommend. But...you need to learn from some who knows how to do it and teach it correctly. Someone like Neghar Fonooni or my friend Rich Thaw. Here is the link to an awesome video in which Rich does an excellent job of teaching the turkish get up. Thanks for sharing Rich!!! innerathletehq/2013/09/11/athlete-video-series-episode-18-the-one-exercise-you-need-to-do-to-get-stronger/
