Three years ago on the tenth anniversary of 9/11, NBC ran second-for-second coverage of the Today show from the morning of 9/11. I watched it for about five minutes before I suddenly realized that while watching Katie Couric, Matt Lauer, and Tom Brokaw in 2011, my brain had somehow jumped back into 2001. All of the sickening feelings, the horror, and the shock came rushing back; and I had to turn it off after five minutes. There are a lot of people out there who have been through various forms of trauma in their lifetimes, and they very much want to move on, but sometimes the wrong combination of circumstances can bring it all rushing back; and its like they never made any progress in getting over it. That doesnt mean the person never forgave. It just means that its time to forgive again. As believers, we live with the privilege and burden of offering the same unconditional forgiveness to others that we have received from God. So I suppose the good thing about the moments when our heart-wrenching traumas come back to life is how clearly they remind us that the only way we can forgive is through Jesus, the One who was so brutally traumatized so that we could be free from the bondage of the sins that have been committed against us. God help us.
