Three years ago today , an event occurred that would change my life. Julie and I had divorced during the summer prior-- and before the divorce a young lady had graciously agreed to be a surrogate and would ultimately bless me with a set of beautiful twins. At eight oclock George William Smith was born at a healthy eight pounds and eleven ounces. He was big and healthy and loud. Eleven minutes later a little fella named John Ashley Smith came along. He was five pounds and thirteen ounces. He was small and seemed weak and quiet; but has gotten much louder over the last three years. I had wanted more children very badly; but, when they came -- it was like what now . I had some wonderful friends that helped me with them for about the first seven months-- in that I was a single dad and really didnt have a clue as what to do with a set of newborns. It was a confusing time because I had alternating shifts of nannies that lived in the house and gave wonderful care to the twins -- but there wasnt much privacy in the house for me and Trent. Julie and I started talking and she moved back in when they were about seven months old and things were a bit more normal ( at least for Trent ). The twins are three years old today and Trent will be nine in five days. I have my own little dysfunctional family. Clients come in my office and tell me that they gave so screwed up family situation -- I half jokingly say : do ya got an ex wife living upstairs helping to raise your twin children. Life throws you many surprises. Some good and some bad. These two ( John and George ) not only changed my life ; but, saved my life. Life is good here. I have my three boys and I thank the good Lord for them being happy, healthy, and smart. I am blessed.
