Three years ago today, our post-Christmas lull shattered when an experiment our son, James Glencoe, created unintentionally detonated. The blast shredded his left hand and caused serious trauma to his right. Calling it a dreadful day is an understatement, to say nothing of the days that followed. That all said, we do not mark this day with sorrow, or even dwell on the trauma the accident caused. Instead, we think mostly of the overwhelming support and help that showered down upon us in the aftermath of the tragedy. Next, we think of James’ incredibly positive attitude. He has never felt “handicapped” or complained of his revised reality. Instead, he has charged ahead, embracing his life with energy and joy. In the last three years, he completed three seasons as a life-guard (a trainer during the last season) at our local water park. He’s continued to tinker and create, dived into car repair (beating up on our old Jeep). Currently, he’s working a construction job building apartments, saving money to serve as a missionary for our church. One of my clients happens to be part of the family building the apartments and had a chance to work with James a few weeks ago. He told me how impressed he was by James’ work ethic, adding, “He’s an inspiration!” Yes, he is. We are very grateful for the young man he’s become.
