Thrilled With Our Win ALLY McCOIST was delighted with his team’s performance as Rangers started their League One title bid with a 4-1 win over Brechin. The Light Blues were handsome victors in the end as goals from Chris Hegarty, Nicky Law, Ian Black and Dean Shiels gave them the three points. Those last two strikes only came in the final nine minutes though and after a nervy spell in which City pulled one back and made life difficult for the hosts. That period aside, Gers were totally dominant and the manager was eager to focus on that after the final whistle. He said: “I’m absolutely thrilled. We had 10 or 15 minutes in the second half when we lost a bit of shape but we were fine apart from that. “I don’t know if there was a lack of concentration or a lack of belief. It looked more like a lack of belief because we had been doing ever so well. “There was a little bit of nervousness but we’ve had that kind of thing for many, many years at times when we’ve not killed teams off. “That aside, we’re delighted. We should have been home and dry at half-time because we had enough chances to win a couple of games. “Some of the football we played, particularly in the first half, was excellent, absolutely excellent, and it has given us a good base to kick on from. “I don’t think there’s any doubt we deserved our lead at half-time and I thought their goalkeeper gave an inspired performance.” The game finally swung in Rangers’ favour in the closing stages when they were awarded a penalty and away full-back Paul McLean was sent off for bringing down Andy Little. He was given a straight red card for preventing a goalscoring opportunity and it was the break the 54-times Scottish champions needed to see them over the line. McCoist admits his side was perhaps fortunate to get the decision but feels it was the correct call all the same. The boss added: “My initial reaction was it was a penalty, albeit a soft one. Andy did extremely well getting his body position between the defender and the ball. “The challenge gave the referee a problem. I’ll watch it back again and if I stand corrected I will but my first instinct was it was the correct decision. “You then go into the argument with the red card punishing Brechin twice which was a bit rough on them.”
